It may be bigger, busier and ‘over there’ but for mxData the New York Subway mobile app is a perfect follow on from their ever popular London Tube Map
London, April 6, 2010 – mxData, the leading provider of mobile application software and services, today unveiled its New York Subway Map mobile application (app). The app provides mobile access to the entire network of subway lines across the ‘Big Apple’. The NY Subway app is available across all platforms and freely downloadable from the various App Stores including Apple, BlackBerry, Ovi (Nokia) and the Android Market.
The new NY Subway Map from mxData follows in the tracks of the highly successful London Tube Map released last year and now downloaded over 1.6 million times. London and New York have often been in ‘friendly’ competition and their metro networks are often compared with one another. For example the New York Subway is considerably busier than the London Underground it was modelled on; 1.6 billion journeys per year compared with 1.2 billion journeys in London. On the other hand London has a longer network with 250 miles of track as opposed to 230 miles in New York, and of course London is older than its younger cousin by 41 years (1863 v 1904). However, when it comes to developing a successful mobile application with the sole purpose of improving the quality of information for city travellers the Tube Map and the New York Subway Map share a common platform; the fastest journey planner combined with live up to the minute news about trains, complete with a quick and simple to use map to guide users through the maze of lines and journey changes.
"The success of the London Tube Map has been terrific because it’s grown by word of mouth and done so because it delivers information people really benefit from, when they need it, and on whatever mobile device they might have. The New York Subway Map is also a cross platform app which means that New Yorkers and visitors to the Big Apple will now be able to simplify their journeys irrespective of their handset or mobile network” says David James, mxData CEO. “We can’t wait to celebrate the millionth download of the New York Subway Map and perhaps add another point of competition between these two great cities."
The New York Subway app has been developed using mxData’s MXI cross-platform development service. MXI offers a very simple user interface, fast development, smooth integration with the native handset functionality and easy upgrades. MXI epitomises the new tightly integrated, comprehensive development environments that manage the entire life cycle of mobile development and deployment. MXI supports all major mobile platforms, including iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Java and Windows, facilitating the targeting of a wide range of handsets, and allowing developers to focus on the creation of compelling mobile services. Built-in reporting within MXI allows developers to obtain consumer behaviour patterns, while support for certification fosters confidence.
